Subway Accidents

Boston Injury Attorneys/Subway Accidents

Boston’s mass transit system is one of the largest in the United States. Parts of its subway system are more than a century old and are remnants of the oldest subway in the United States. Operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, about half of the system’s 1.2 million daily riders use the subway to travel in and around the Boston area.

MBTA Facts

  • The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority was formed in 1964 and is charged with operating the state’s bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry system.
  • The system averages more than 1.2 million passengers a day.
  • The subway’s 600,000 passengers make it the fourth-busiest subway system in the United States.
  • Only the MBTA and Philadelphia’s SEPTA operate all five major types of transit vehicles: Commuter rails, subway or elevated train, light-rail trolleys, electric trolleys and buses.
  • The 244,000 riders a day that use the Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line make it the busiest light-rail system in the United States.

The system also operates with the highest debt load of any subway in the nation, which has severely limited funding for future projects, despite a significant rate hike to keep the system solvent. It has faced ongoing criticism in recent years, ranging from fiscal responsibility to health and safety issues. A new general manager was named in 2010 in an effort to clean up the system.
